Officers inspected the package following the explosion, with some witnesses describe it as looking like a microwave
St Mary Axe, the street next to the famous Gherkin (pictured) was in lockdown for an hour
Buses were put on diversion around the area, in the heart of the capital’s financial district.
Onlookers watching from office windows took to Twitter saying the package looked like a microwave.
Matthew Reeves wrote: “This is the controlled explosion outside the Gherkin on St Mary Axe, City of London.
“Looks like a microwave, red parts appear to be packaging. Area still locked down.”
Another image taken by a witness and posted on Twitter shows the bomb robot surrounded by police
City of London Police said in a tweet just before 9am: “We’ve put cordons around St Mary Axe due to a report of a suspicious package (a box) in Bury St received at 8.56am.
“We’d ask people to avoid the area while we deal with the incident, and for people in nearby buildings to follow their internal procedures.”
The force then tweeted an hour later at t 9.55am that the cordon had been lifted and the bomb robot was taken away.
Later they revealed the package was ‘a discarded electrical item’ and there was ‘no cause for alarm.
The force added: ‘We always encourage you to report anything that doesn’t feel right, no matter how small it seems.’
