(HARARE, Zimbabwe.) LATEST: Emmerson Mnangagwa has broken off a trip to WEF in Davos after violent protests in his home country following the doubling of fuel prices that protestors believe are being used to fuel violence by his security forces #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Jan.22: Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has broken off a trip to Europe after violent protests in his home country: Mr Mnangagwa had been due to attend the Davos economic summit where he was expected to seek investment for Zimbabwe…………..Ministers say the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) is using sharp fuel price increases as a pretext for violence……….But the MDC accuses the authorities of a brutal crackdown #AceNewsDesk reports

Mr Mnangagwa announced a steep increase in the fuel price earlier this month: The price rises were meant to tackle fuel shortages, but mean that Zimbabwe now has the most expensive fuel in the world, according to GlobalPetrolPrices.com.

Many Zimbabweans, worn down by years of economic hardship, have suddenly found they cannot even afford the bus fare to work: This has led to angry protests in the capital, Harare, and the south-western city of Bulawayo.

The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO forum says at least 12 people were killed and 78 treated for gunshot injuries: The rights group also says that over 240 people have been treated after being assaulted or tortured, while the opposition says government forces have attacked people in their homes.

The UN has called on the government to halt the “excessive use of force” by security forces, amid reports of door-to-door searches and the use of live ammunition: The government blocked Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp messaging apps last week, until a high court ordered it to restore access…………..Mr Mnangagwa, who arrived back in Harare late on Monday night, condemned the demonstrations, saying “everyone has the right to protest, but this was not a peaceful protest”…………….He accused protesters of “wanton violence and cynical destruction” and “looting police stations, stealing guns and uniforms”.

It accuses the opposition MDC party of using the protests for political means:

Presidential spokesman George Charamba said on Sunday: “The MDC leadership has been consistently pushing out the message that they will use violent street action to overturn the results of [last year’s] ballot.” …………..The opposition rejected a court ruling in August 2018 that confirmed that President Mnangagwa had defeated MDC leader Nelson Chamisa……………..Mr Charamba warned on Sunday that the security forces’ actions were just “a foretaste of things to come“………………However, Mr Mnangagwa struck a different tone on Tuesday, saying that any violence from the security forces will be investigated and punished……………….Some observers fear that the violence is a sign that the country could be returning to autocratic rule.

Mr Chamisa said many of the party’s members had been detained including four MPs: The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, the umbrella group that called the protests, says its leader Japhet Moyo has also been arrested………..Mr Chamisa told the BBC that there was “no justification whatsoever of having soldiers with live ammunition, with guns, machine guns, AK47 on the streets, beating up citizens”………….”People are being approached in their homes, they are being taken out of their homes with their families even if they are sleeping… a lot of people have been arrested for no apparent reason,” he said: MDC national chairperson Thabitha Khumalo said that she had gone into hiding after the police and military turned up at her home at night.

Why have fuel prices increased?

People queue for gas in Harare, Zimbabwe, 20 January 2019ReutersHigher fuel prices have hit many Zimbabweans hard: President Mnangagwa has defended the price rise, saying “I was aware that these measures may not be popular… but it was the right thing to do.”……………The price rise was aimed at tackling shortages caused by an increase in fuel use and “rampant” illegal trading, he said…………..Mr Mnangagwa has been struggling to revive the economy, which is experiencing high inflation while wages have stagnated.Zimbabwe's high fuel cost

It emerged on Monday that South Africa had rejected a request from Zimbabwe for an emergency loan of $1.2bn (£932m) in December: The government had hoped the cash would help stabilise the economy and resolve fuel shortages in the country.

(NEW DELHI, India.) JUST IN: Police on Tuesday arrested 31 Rohingya Muslims stranded on the border after they were denied entry into Bangladesh and border officials failed to agree on what to do with members of the community fleeing a crackdown on what Hindu government regards as illegal aliens #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Jan.22: India’s Hindu nationalist government regards the Rohingya as illegal aliens and a security risk, and has ordered that tens of thousands of them who live in scattered settlements and slums around the country be identified and repatriated: The stranded Rohingya, including women and children, had been stuck in no-man’s land on Bangladesh’s border with India since Friday. Two rounds of talks between border officials failed to find a solution #AceNewsDesk reports

“We have arrested them under the Foreigners Act on charges of entering India without valid travel documents,” said Ajay Kumar Das, a police official in the northeast state of Tripura that borders Bangladesh: Hundreds of thousands of members of mostly Buddhist Myanmar’s Rohingya community have left their homes in Myanmar’s Rakhine State over the decades, most fleeing military crackdowns and discrimination.

Many have sought shelter in Bangladesh – where nearly one million live – but others have ended up in India, Southeast Asia and beyond: The 31 had been living in Kashmir and some of them carried identity cards issued by the U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR…………..The UNHCR has issued about 16,500 Rohingya in India with identity cards that it says can help “prevent harassment, arbitrary arrests, detention and deportation.” India does not recognise the cards.

India’s deportation of seven Rohingya men to Myanmar in October raised fears in the community of a wider crackdown and prompted hundreds of Rohingya families to leave India for Bangladesh: Indian police arrested another group of 30 Rohingya on Monday in the northeastern state of Assam, where they had moved after living for six years in Jammu and Kashmir, India’s only Muslim majority state.

Members of the group said they were looking for work after losing their jobs in Kashmir, police said: “The arrests were made during a routine check by police and after interrogation we found they are all from Myanmar,” said Imon Saikia, a police official in the city of Karimganj where the group was arrested.

JUST IN: Guernsey police say that rescuers are searching for a light aircraft that disappeared on Monday night between France and Cardiff and was believed two have two people on board including Emiliano Sala: Spokeswoman for HM Coastguard helicopters from Solent and Newquay have been helping to search overnight with nothing found,” she said #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Jan.22: There is “genuine concern” Premier League footballer Emiliano Sala was on a light aircraft which disappeared between France and Cardiff: It is feared the Argentine striker was one of two people on board the Piper Malibu, which went missing off Alderney in the Channel Islands on Monday night: Cardiff City, which signed the 28-year-old for £15m from French club Nantes on Saturday, said it was “seeking clarification” as to what happened” A search resumed at 08:00 GMT………..Guernsey Police said “no trace” of the missing aircraft had been found………It left Nantes at 19:15 and had been flying at 5,000ft when it contacted Jersey air traffic control requesting descent, the force said……….The plane lost contact while at 2,300ft………..Sightings of red flares were reported during a lifeboat and helicopter search, but “nothing of significance was found”, a Channel Islands Air Search spokeswoman said #AceNewsDesk reports

Piper Malibu planeGetty ImagesThe Piper Malibu plane is reported to have lost contact near the Casquets lighthouse: Searches were suspended at 02:00 “due to strengthening winds, worsening sea conditions and reducing visibility”, police added………….Cardiff Airport confirmed the aircraft was due to arrive from Nantes but a spokeswoman said there were no further details………..Guernsey harbour master Captain David Barker said no distress call had been received………He said conditions were “much better” after searches resumed.

It’s far easier to see something on the surface in daylight,” he said. “We are looking for any traces of an aircraft, a life raft, persons in the water, life jackets.”

The Met Office said conditions were not “too intense” at the time the aircraft went missing but had become wetter and windier later in the evening.

Emiliano Sala told Cardiff City he wanted to “start training and get down to work”

Cardiff signed Sala for a club record fee after protracted negotiations with Nantes: He has been among the top scorers in France in recent years and had scored 13 league and cup goals this season, third behind Kylian Mbappe and Nicolas Pepe.

When his signing to Cardiff was announced, he said: “It gives me great pleasure and I can’t wait to start training, meet my new teammates and get down to work.”

Club chief executive Ken Choo said: “I’m sure all Cardiff City fans will join me in that and we can look forward to seeing our record signing in a Bluebirds shirt.”……….The most recent tweet from Sala’s account was a picture of him and his former team-mates, captioned “La ultima ciao”, or “the last goodbye”.

The flight disappeared off radar near the Casquets lighthouse, infamous among mariners as the site of many shipwrecks, 8 miles (13km) north-west of Alderney: HM Coastguard said the disappearance was not in the UK search and rescue area, but it had sent two helicopters to help……….A spokeswoman said they were assisting Guernsey Coastguard with a search for a light aircraft off Alderney.”HM Coastguard helicopters from Solent and Newquay have been helping to search overnight with nothing found,” she said.

(SHANGHAI, China.) Online Trademark Office: Sanctions & Trade Negotiations that lead the way for Ivanka Trumps company preliminary approval for five more trademarks on Sunday filed in 2016 – 2017 before the sanctions were applied her lawyers did not respond for comment #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Jan.21: The Chinese government has granted Ivanka Trump’s company preliminary approval for another five trademarks this month, as her father’s administration pushes ahead on trade negotiations with China: Four trademarks, including child care centers, sunglasses and wedding dresses, were approved on Sunday #AceNewsDesk reports

A fifth, covering brokerage, charitable fundraising and art valuation services, was approved on Jan. 6, according to online trademark office records: The applications were filed in 2016 and 2017. If no one objects, they will be finalised after 90 days………………………………..Ivanka Trump’s expanding intellectual property holdings have long raised ethical concerns, particularly in China, where the courts and bureaucracy tend to reflect the will of the ruling Communist Party.

Ivanka Trump’s lawyers in China did not respond immediately to a request for comment: Critics argue that by asking a foreign government for valuable intellectual property rights, White House officials could open themselves to pressure in government negotiations. There is also concern that the family’s global trademark portfolio would open the way for lucrative business opportunities once Donald Trump leaves office.

Ivanka Trump closed her fashion brand in July: Her representatives assert that trademark filings are a normal business practice and are needed to protect her name from copycats seeking to capitalise on her fame.

Companies apply for trademarks for a range of reasons: They can be signs of corporate ambition, but many also are filed defensively, particularly in China, where trademark squatting is rampant……………………China has said it treats all trademark applications equally under the law.

Ivanka Trump’s Business Wins Approval for More China Trademarks

By Caroline Zhang
May 25, 2018

UPDATE June 27, 2018 : Ivanka Trump’s business received registration approval for three additional Chinese trademarks on June 7, 2018, according to trademark database records reviewed by CREW. On that same date, President Trump agreed to lift sanctions against the Chinese telecommunications company ZTE, a controversial move that the U.S. Senate is currently challenging. Ivanka Trump Marks LLC applied for these trademarks in July of 2016.

On May 7, 2018, Ivanka Trump’s business received “registration” approval from the Chinese government for five trademark applications: An additional trademark also received “first trial” approval on May 6. The trademarks, which were applied for in March of 2017, give Ivanka’s business trademark rights on goods including bath mats, textiles, and baby blankets.

This isn’t the first time that Ivanka’s and President Trump’s business connections to China have raised potential ethics issues: The same week Ivanka’s business received registration approval, President Trump announced that he would work to save jobs at the Chinese telecommunications company ZTE. About 72 hours before his announcement, the Chinese government also agreed to loan $500 million to a project in Indonesia in which the Trump Organization is a partner.

Four of the other trademarks Ivanka’s business applied for in March 2017 have received “first trial” approval, and one other received “registration” approval in March: Ivanka Trump Marks LLC already holds more than a dozen trademarks in the country as well as multiple pending applications. China is also a major supplier of Ivanka Trump-branded merchandise

As a White House adviser, Ivanka has represented the United States at multiple diplomatic events despite the potential conflicts her business interests present: Although Ivanka has stepped down from her role at her business and has placed it in a trust, she continues to receive profits from the business.

Last year, Ivanka’s business won preliminary approval for three trademarks on the same day that she dined with Chinese President Xi Jinping at Mar-a-Lago: Earlier this year, Trump announced tariffs against China that exempted clothing — including clothing imports from Ivanka’s Chinese manufacturers.

Despite these potential conflicts, Ivanka continues to play a prominent foreign policy role: She and her husband Jared Kushner were recently part of the U.S. delegation to Jerusalem. The Trump administration is also currently in trade negotiations with China.

#AceNewsReport – Jan.21: SANA’s reporter said that news reports confirmed that four members of Kurdish armed units were killed and two American soldiers were injured in the car bomb attack, which took place while a convoy of US troops was passing in the 47 area in Hasaka’s southern countryside: International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has condemned the continued Israeli attacks on the Syrian territories, affirming that they constitute a blatant violation of the international conventions and the resolution no. 2131 for the year 1965 #AceNewsDesk reports

In a statement issued by the office of its Middle East Commissioner Ambassador Haitham Abu Said, the IHRC reaffirmed that “The repetition of the aggression in this way will threaten the region and might lead to dire consequences.”……….In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday morning, Abu Said called upon Guterres to personally intervene and send a firm message to “Israel” to stop its continued aggressions on the Syrian territories.

Earlier, a military source said that a 1:10 am on Monday 21/01/2019, the Israeli enemy conducted land and air strikes through successive waves of guided missiles, and the Syrian air defenses retaliated immediately and intercepted the hostile missiles and destroyed most of them before they reached their targets.
