NASSAU COUNTY, Florida. At least 10 homes and 350-400 acres of forest were destroyed in an illegal wildfire caused by a man who was burning books Wednesday – @AceNewsServices

#AceNewsReport – Mar.23: Only a few minor injuries to emergency personnel have been reported in what’s being called the Garfield Road Fire, according to the Florida Forest Service.

Florida fire started by book burning destroys at least 10 homes but it has burned an estimated 350 to 400 acres near Bryceville, about 20 miles west of Jacksonville.

Officials said in a news conference Thursday morning the wildfire was 65% contained and no longer spreading.

Officials in Florida say a fire that burned several homes was caused by a man burning paperback books on Wednesday, March 22, 2017.

Firefighters will continue to work in the area but a full containment of the fire is not expected on Thursday, they said.

Authorities will be watching strong winds predicted for the afternoon to see how they may affect the fire, Billy Estep, director of Emergency Management in Nassau County, told reporters at the news conference.

The fire started Wednesday afternoon when a man was burning paperback books, said Annaleasa Winter of the Florida Forest Service, in a briefing Wednesday night.

It was an illegal burn,” she said, adding that it’s against the law to burn household garbage in Florida.

“It was paper. It got away from him.”

The man’s intention was to burn some trash, Estep told CNN.

“(It was) purely an accident,” he said.

The fire spiraled to about five acres and began spreading out of control, fueled by windy conditions, Winter said.

The man has been issued a notice of violation and will be sent a forestry bill for all the equipment and personnel used into fighting the fire, which could be several thousands of dollars, Winter said. He could also be held civilly liable for any damage caused by the fire.

The fire wreaked havoc in the neighborhood, forcing residents to flee their homes as flames closed in.

One man told CNN affiliate WFOX that he had just arrived home when his family was told to evacuate.

By the time we were pulling stuff out of the house into the trucks, the fire was already taking out (the) gazebo, taking out the pool deck. It was already in the backyard,” Randy Hoke told the station.

This is the largest and most destructive wildland fire in Nassau County since 1998.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve had an intense fire through the area,” Winter said.

CNN’s Keith Allen and Sheena Jones contributed to this report.

RT News reported former Russian lawmaker Denis Voronenkov has been #shot and #killed in central Kiev, Ukrainian #police have said.

KyivPost reported that exiled Russian lawmaker assassinated in Kyiv Voronenkov, a former member of Russian Communist Party, emigrated to Ukraine from Russia in 2016 and received Ukrainian citizenship in December. He was highly critical of the Russian authorities, who launched a fraud investigation against him following his criticism.

In January, Voronenkov testified against former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in Kyiv.

Voronenkov was #shot twice in the head when he was leaving Premier Palace Hotel on the corner of Taras Shevchenko Boulevard and Pushkinska Street.

The alleged attacker also wounded Voronenkov’s bodyguard, who fired shots at the assailant. Both the attacker and the bodyguard were taken to the hospital, the #police said.

Various eyewitnesses said they had heard from six to 12 gunshots. A gun was found lying next to Voronenkov’s head.

An alleged attacker was lying on the ground a few meters away from Voronenkov, face down. He was wearing a gray sweatsuit and gloves.

The investigation’s main version is that the assassination was ordered from Russia, Larysa Sargan, a spokeswoman for Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko, told Channel 112.

Voronenkov was going to a meeting with another exiled Russian lawmaker, Ilya Ponomarev, when he was attacked. “He was heading to a meeting with me. I have no words,” Ponomarev tweeted.

Voronenkov leaves a wife and two children.

Ukraine’s president Petro Poroshenko released a statement on the murder, pointing finger at Russian special services.

“Despicable #murder of Denis Voronenkov in the Kyiv center is an act of terrorism by Russia, (the country) that he was forced to leave for political reasons. Russian special services were involved in it,” Poroshenko’s statement reads. “Voronenkov was one of the main witnesses of the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the role of (ex-Ukrainian President Viktor) Yanukovych in bringing troops to Ukraine.”

Poroshenko was backed by Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko, who called the murder “a typical public execution by Kremlin.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called such statements absurd.

“We think that any guesses about the so-called ‘Russian trace’ are absurd. We hope that the murderer and those behind him will be found,” Peskov told the Russian media.

Testimony against Yanukovych, charges in Russia

Voronenkov and his wife, Maria Maksakova, who is also a former Russian lawmaker, left Russia for Ukraine in October 2016 after the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office refused to launch a probe against Voronenkov’s alleged involvement in an illegal property seizure in Moscow in 2015. The probe was recommended by the federal Investigative Committee.

Voronenkov said that in January he testified in the case against former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who is under investigation by Ukrainian authorities for high treason and encroachment on the territorial integrity of Ukraine in 2014. Yanukovych is also a suspect in multibillion-dollar corruption and mass murder.

In February, Russian authorities launched a large-scale fraud investigation against Voronenkov. The charges followed the publication of Voronenkov’s interview in the Ukrainian media outlet Censor.net.ua, where he was highly critical of Russian authorities. During the interview, he said that Russia was in the grip of a “pseudo-patriotic frenzy” similar to Nazi Germany, and claimed that it was a “mistake” for Russia to annex the Crimean peninsula.

Safety concerns, warnings

In an interview with the Gordon.ua news site in February, Voronenkov said that some people were calling for his assassination on Russian television.

“On Russian television channels everyone is shouting: Voronenkov should be exchanged for Roman Sushchenko (a Ukrainian political prisoner held in Russia) and, if this fails, he should be killed like (Ukrainian nationalist leader Stepan) Bandera,” he said. “People in Russia have gone crazy, they’re not sane.”

Voronenkov and his wife, Maria Maksakova, were highly critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin in interviews with journalists, including a February interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Christopher Miller headlined: “Seen As Turncoats By Moscow, Exiled Duma Pair Blasts Moscow From Kyiv.”

In that interview, Voronenkov said that he is not interested in entering Ukrainian politics and is not currently working. Even though feeling relatively safe, Voronenkov said that he feared for his and his family’s safety.

In the same interview, his wife Maksakova said that she and Voronenkov let Moscow with no clear agenda but to escape pressure from the Federal Security Service (FSB).

Even though Voronenkov is registered as having voted in favor of Russia’s annexation of Crimea, in an interview with Radio Free Europe, he denied that he cast his vote himself.

In 2014, Voronenkov was co-authoring the bill in the State Duma that banned the foreign ownership of Russian media.

Last year, his name surfaced in the so-called Panama Papers leak as a shareholder of a British Virgin Island company.

#AceSecurityNews – The Russian author of the notorious ‘ Citadel Malware ‘ which infected over 11 million PCs and stole an astonishing $500 million from bank accounts has pleaded guilty to his crimes – @AceNewsServices

#AceNewsReport – Mar.23: Twenty nine-year-old Mark Vartanyan, who went by the online handle of “Kolypto”, was arrested in the Norwegian town of Fredrikstad in 2015 at the request of the FBI …

The State of Security reported that the Author of Citadel malware, used to steal $500 million from bank accounts, pleads guilty his extradition to the United States occurred last December, against the wishes of Russia who argued that the evidence against Vartanyan was weak and the case was politically-motivated.

Nonetheless, Vartanyan has now admitted his guilt as a plea bargain with US federal prosecutors who have agreed not to seek a prison sentence of more than ten years.

A maximum term of ten years may still sound like a lot of time for anyone to waste their life behind bars (it is!) but it’s still a lot better than the 25 or more prosecutors might have sought instead.

The Citadel malware first caught the attention of security researchers in late 2011, when it was found being made available for sale on Russian-language crime forums.

Citadel made it relatively easier for online fraudsters to steal banking credentials, credit card information, and personal data with the intention of breaking into victim’s bank accounts and making unauthorised transactions.

Citadel malware email

<img class=”aligncenter size-full wp-image-45900″ src=”https://3b6xlt3iddqmuq5vy2w0s5d3-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/state-of-security/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/swift-citadel-email.jpeg” alt=”Citadel malware email” />

In addition, Citadel could hijack control of users’ Windows PCs and even attempt to grab the master passwords of some third-party password managers, and block access to anti-virus vendor websites.

To increase its chances of success, Citadel could be used in targeted attacks exploiting Microsoft zero-day vulnerabilities to infect firms, as well as more traditional attacks.

And it’s clear that Citadel was very much a serious commercial enterprise for its developer. Some editions of the malware even incorporated a built-in Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to provide quick and effective support to its criminal customers, which the developers were happy to brag about in online postings:

“Its no secret that the products in our field — without support from the developers — result in a piece of junk on your hard drive. Therefore, the product should be improved according to the wishes of our customers. One problem is that you have probably experienced developers who ignore your instant messages, because there are many customers but there is only one developer.”

Vartanyan may be heading rapidly to prison, but his malware is still out there in the hands of many other criminals who could potentially exploit it to steal from innocent computer users. One of the frustrations with fighting malware is that even after the perpetrators have been put away, the crimes can keep being committed.

Vartanyan, who is scheduled to be sentenced in June, isn’t the first person to be charged in connection with the Citadel malware.

In September 2015, 22-year-old Russian national Dmitry Belorossov – who went by the online handle of “Rainerfox” – was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison after he admitted using the Citadel malware to commit fraud, and hijacking control of some 7000 computers.
