(HARARE, Zimbabwe.) LATEST: Fuel Demonstrators Protesting Steep Price Increases: As service provider ‘ Econet ‘ says its been ordered to ‘ shutdown the Internet until further notice ‘ blocking immediate access to Twitter and Facebook preventing crucial access to mobile money to pay workers #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Jan.18: Zimbabwe has imposed an internet shutdown as demonstrators protesting a steep fuel increase were attacked by security forces, according to reports: The African country’s largest internet service provider – Econet – says it has been ordered to cut services until further notice: Access to Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter has been intermittently blocked since protests broke out on Monday, according to the BBC……….At least three people have been killed and 600 people have been arrested #AceNewsDesk reports

“We were served with another directive for total shutdown of the internet until further notice,” Econet said in a text message Friday, according to Agence France-Presse: “Our lawyers advised we are required to comply with the directive pending the court decision on its legality. The earlier directive(s) are already the subject of pending high court application………….”We sincerely apologise for all inconveniences caused by the acts of government.”……………….One of those arrested, pastor and activist Evan Mawarire, was charged with inciting civil disobedience online. “It’s a shame what’s happening,” the pastor said.

The US embassy in Harare said it was “alarmed by credible reports that security forces are targeting and beating political activists and labor leaders,” the French news agency reported: Our country is going through one of the most trying periods in its history,” the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference said in a sweeping statement lamenting the government’s “intolerant handling of dissent” and its failure to halt economic collapse.

The internet shutdown cuts off crucial access to the mobile money that Zimbabwe’s government uses to pay teachers and other public workers: Some said they can no longer afford fares for public transport, and some shops have run out of basics such as bread.

The protests began after President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced that fuel prices were being doubled in a country suffering regular shortages of fuel, food and medicine, AFP reported: Mnangagwa, who succeeded ousted authoritarian president Robert Mugabe in 2017, had promised a fresh start for Zimbabwe after decades of repression and economic decline.

(BOTOGA, Colombia.) JUST IN: At least five people were killed and another 10 injured in a car bombing at a p olice academy in Colombia’s capital on Thursday, authorities said #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Jan.17: The scene outside the General Santander police academy in southern Bogota was chaotic, with ambulances and helicopters rushing to the normally tightly controlled facility.Witnesses said they heard a loud explosion that destroyed windows in adjacent apartment buildings #AceNewsDesk reports

Pictures on social media showed a charred vehicle surrounded by debris on the academy’s campus: Bogota Mayor Enrique Penalosa said at least 5 people were killed and 10 injured.President Ivan Duque, who was visiting a western state, was rushing back to the capital to oversee police operations: For decades, residents of Bogota lived in fear of being caught in a bombing by leftist rebels or Pablo Escobar’s Medellin drug cartel.

But as Colombia’s conflict has wound down, and the nation’s largest rebel group disarmed under a 2016 peace deal, security has improved and attacks have become less frequent: While authorities had yet to suggest who was behind the attack, attention was focused on leftist rebels from the National Liberation Army, which has been stepping up attacks on police targets in Colombia amid a standoff with the conservative Duque over how to re-start stalled peace talks.

(WORLDWIDE) BEGINNING OF THE END: #ClimateChange2018 The hottest for planets oceans since global records beg an in 1958 according to a study its no use trying to stop the world heating up its all ready there NOW ITS TIME THE 🕰 IS TICKING #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Jan.16: Last year was the hottest for the planet’s oceans since global records began in 1958, according to an international team of scientists who track the data: Their findings were published Wednesday in the scientific journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences: The year 2018 passed the previous record set just the year before, in 2017; the top five years of ocean heat have come in the last five years: Last year continues a startling trend of global ocean warming that is a direct result of humans’ warming of the planet, the authors say #AceNewsDesk reports

The same group of scientists published a study last week showing that oceans are warming faster than scientists thought, by absorbing more heat than was previously known: That will result in a six-fold increase in ocean warming by 2081-2100, compared to the past 60 years: Warmer oceans lead to a variety of problems, such as sea level rise, more intense storms with heavier rainfall, coral bleaching and melting polar ice.
What warmer oceans mean for the planet

The increasing amount of heat-trapping gases, such as carbon dioxide, released into the atmosphere by humans, creates an energy imbalance that leads to global heating: “The vast majority of global warming heat ends up deposited in the world’s oceans,” the authors say, which make it one of the best — if not the best — indicator for climate change. In fact, studies show over 90% of the heat trapped by greenhouse gases gets absorbed in the ocean……………….”Increases in ocean heat are incontrovertible proof that the Earth is warming,” the study said.

Ocean heat shows proof of global warming

Ocean heat content (OHC) in the upper 2000m during 2018.Ocean heat content (OHC) in the upper 2000m during 2018.

Kevin Trenberth, a scientist with the Climate Analysis Section at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research and co-author of the study, said the ocean heat trend is a better climate change indicator than air temperature: “The global mean surface temperature record is greatly affected by weather, El Nino and so forth,” Trenberth said. “The ocean heat warming signal is much more visible and not as noisy.”

This graph shows how closely the increase in ocean heat content compares to the increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide.

This graph shows how closely the increase in ocean heat content compares to the increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide.

The impacts from warming oceans were clearly visible during the past year, according the study’s authors: The added heat resulted in a global mean sea level rise of 29.5 millimetres above the 1981-2010 average, which was the largest ever observed: Rising sea levels makes coastal communities more susceptible to storm surges, coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion of freshwater supplies.

Climate change is making storms like Hurricane Florence worse

Warmer water fueled a number of major hurricanes and typhoons across the world in 2018, including hurricanes Michael and Florence, which brought massive wind destruction and devastating floods to the US Southeast, and Super Typhoon Mangkhut, the strongest storm of the year, which caused major damage to the Philippines and Hong Kong: The warmer water also allows the air to hold more moisture, which supercharged the rainfall from Hurricane Florence in the Carolinas: Warmer than normal ocean waters in the Pacific in Indian Ocean also fed major flooding events in Japan and India: Other impacts from the warmer oceans includebleaching and death of coral reefs, which have been significant in recent years in the Great Barrier Reef off of Australia: Melting sea ice and ice shelves are another by product of the added heat in the oceans, and can also add to sea level rise as land ice flows into the ocean: An unrelated study released earlier this week found that warmer ocean temperatures have been melting Antarctic ice at a rapidly accelerating rate.

(LONDON) JUST IN: #Brexit NOW it’s a NO Deal after lawmakers voted 432-202 to reject Brexit and then Labours Corbyn calls for a vote of no confidence in the government weeks after her own party voted to retai n her as leader for the next 12-months: Any contract needs a backstop pardon the pun and these so called law makers have no idea… Next? #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Jan.15: Editor says here’s what we know …………U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May has lost a crucial vote on her #Brexit plans in the House of Commons, the U.K.’s lower house of parliament: May lost by 230 votes after lawmakers voted by 432 to 202 to reject the deal #AceNewsDesk reports

Lawmakers from different political parties rejected the proposed Withdrawal Agreement, currently the only deal agreed with the European Union on how Britain should exit the bloc in March of this year: As soon as the vote was cast, May stood to tell lawmakers that tonight’s vote showed nothing about what Parliament supports.

Her deal with Europe is seen by some as a sell-out to the ideals of Brexit, reducing Britain’s influence while staying within many of the EU’s rules: And many of those who oppose Brexit didn’t like the deal either. They have argued that it will reduce Britain’s ease of trade with the world, repel global talent, and increase the cost of living.

The result creates a political vacuum in the Brexit process, with no firm certainty as to what might happen next: Potential outcomes range from a revised attempt by May to force her plan through, a second Brexit referendum or even a General Election.

An earlier amendment to the Brexit deal, giving the U.K the right to exit the backstop unilaterally was heavily defeated by 600 votes to 24: In a final statement to Parliament prior to the vote, May had urged lawmakers to back her deal or risk further division across the country.

On June 23, 2016, voters in the U.K. favored leaving the EU by 51.9 percent. The U.K. is legally set to leave the political and trading bloc on March 29:

Following the heavy defeat, the pound gyrated briefly below $1.27 before recovering. Sterling had been sitting near session lows at $1.273 prior to the vote.

What was the vote? …………….Tuesday’s vote in the House of Commons was termed the “Meaningful Vote” and granted lawmakers to have their say on the terms of Brexit that the EU and British government have already agreed.

It was only granted to U.K. lawmakers after British businesswoman Gina Miller won a 2016 court case in the High Court of Justice, demanding that Parliament must have a say.

(NEW YORK) G20 Celebration of Candy Delights: A sculpture celebrating Saudi Arabia’s place in the Summit was erected on the ‘ World Trade Center ‘ grounds last week, a stone’s throw a way from the 9/11 memorial is this just insensitive given that 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi. Even though a federal judge rejected their motion to have the charges dropped #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Jan.14: Shaped to resemble a piece of candy, the nine-foot-tall statue bears the Kingdom’s emerald flag emblazoned with the Arabic inscription: “There is no god but Allah, and Mohammed is the prophet.” It was created by French sculptor Laurence Jenkell in 2011 as part of the larger installation “Candy Nations” which depicts G20 countries as sugary delights: Said Jenkell: “ .”………City officials should move it…………Would a giant sculpture containing Shinto inscriptions be put up at Pearl Harbor? But nothing will be done about this………To move it would be “Islamophobic,” and the de Blasio administration would rather have its teeth pulled out with rusty pliers than do anything that might even give the appearance of “Islamophobia.”#AceNewsDesk reports

“A Sculpture Celebrating Saudi Arabia Has Been Erected on Ground Zero,” by Davis Richardson, Observer, January 9, 2019 (thanks to The Religion of Peace):

“I first created flag candy sculptures to celebrate mankind on an international level and pay tribute to People of the entire world,” Jenkell told Observer in a statement. “Given the unique and justified sensitivities surrounding the World Trade Center, it came to my mind to propose to remove the sculpture showcasing the flag of Saudi Arabia, or relocate it to a less sensitive location. But there is no way I can do such a thing as the flag of Saudi Arabia is entirely part of the G20 just like any other candy flag of this Candy Nations show.”

The installation was curated and installed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey….

Although the installation was originally created in 2011 to convey “an optimistic message of unity beneath external differences,” its placement at the World Trade Center raises questions given longstanding accusations directed toward Saudi Arabia in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. In 2003, hundreds of families affected by the 9/11 terror attacks sued the Kingdom over its alleged involvement in harboring terrorism—given that 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi.

Last March, a U.S. federal judge rejected Saudi Arabia’s motion to drop the charges.
