(SILICONE VALLEY, Calif.) Zuckerberg has been asking several ‘ Wall Street ‘ banks for ‘ Private Data ‘ WSJ reported Monday: But he is now denying the report, but as we all know there is no smoke without fire and he has been found twisting the truth to meet his advertising profits before …….So watch this space as chatbot AI and messenger platform discussed #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Aug.08: Editor says l have attached with thanks a fellow bloggers post to the this report that covers WSJ and others: Facebook says it’s not “actively” seeking consumers’ banking data: On Monday, the Wall Street Journal that Facebook has asked several major banks to provide information like account balances and credit card activity……….According to the report, Facebook asked firms like JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citigroup and U.S. Bancorp to discuss possible offerings it could provide for users on its Messenger chat platform #AceNewsDesk reports

Facebook declined to comment on whether it has been in talks with those companies but clarified it does work with banks to offer various services on Messenger: “A recent Wall Street Journal story implies incorrectly that we are actively asking financial services companies for financial transaction data — this is not true,” a Facebook spokesperson told CNNMoney. “Like many online companies with commerce businesses, we partner with banks and credit card companies to offer services like customer chat or account management.”

For example, Facebook users can link their PayPal account to Facebook Messenger and track their account balances, receipts and shipping updates. American Express customers can use Messenger to track purchases. Facebook said none of this financial data is shared with advertisers.

“The idea is that messaging with a bank can be better than waiting on hold over the phone — and it’s completely opt-in,” the Facebook spokesperson added

A spokeswoman for Citigroup said the company recognizes its customers are increasingly spending more time on social media and it wants to be where consumers are. However, she noted some privacy concerns.

“While we regularly have conversations about potential partnerships, safeguarding the security and privacy of our customers’ data and providing customer choice are paramount in everything we do,” said the spokesperson.

Although Citi doesn’t offer a chatbot concierge service within Messenger in the US, it allows users in Singapore to use the platform to check account balances, see recent transactions and view their rewards points balance.

JPMorgan is not “sharing our customers’ off-platform transaction data with these platforms, and have had to say no to some things as a result,” a spokeswoman told the Journal. The bank confirmed her statement to CNNMoney.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for US Bancorp told CNNMoney it has not shared any customer information or data to Facebook or any other tech platform. “The privacy and protection of our customers’ personal information and data is our highest priority,” he added.

Wells Fargo said in a statement that “maintaining the privacy of customer data is of paramount importance” to the bank.

“We are not actively engaged in data-sharing conversations with Facebook,” the company said.

The Journal’s report comes as Facebook has drawn increasing criticism over its privacy practices following revelations that political data firm Cambridge Analytica obtained the personal data of as many as 87 million Facebook users worldwide.

(USA) Defence Future Force Field: Astonishingly futuristic new tech creates a seemingly invisible, impenetrable, protective bubble around military armored vehicles making enemy attempts to fire at U.S. tanks pretty pointless – those rounds won’t hit the tank, they’ll explode mid-air and much more in this report #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Aug.03: Think of it almost like making a tank smart enough to defend itself. With the upgrade, tanks automatically protect the crew inside and prevent enemy rounds from making contact with the armour: Within the blink of an eye, this remarkable technology detects the enemy fire, locates it and launches a response that destroys the threat at a safe distance from the vehicle #AceNewsDesk reports

‘Force field’ tech could make US tanks unstoppable

Defense Specialist Allison Barrie has the inside scoop on astonishingly futuristic new technology that creates a seemingly invisible, impenetrable, protective bubble around military armored vehicles.

It is sort of like a tiny missile defense system used to protect countries– but one designed to ride along with armored vehicles: RPGs (Rocket Propelled Grenades) and even Anti-Tank Guided Missiles that can slay tanks are stopped mid-air, precisely intercepted and prevented from hitting the U.S. military tank………..Most types of enemy fire will never reach a tank protected with this tech. It will change warfare forever.

The mind-blowing tech is called Active Protection Systems – or APS

APS gives soldiers massively better protection, but without adding the weight of additional armor slowing down the vehicles’ speed and maneuverability.

File photo (US Marine Corps)

In the near term, the iconic main battle tank M1 Abrams will be the first to be kitted out with this remarkable new approach to keeping crews safe. The M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles and Strykers are also expected to receive this remarkable upgrade soon as well.

Imagine the U.S. Army being able to send vehicles into battle that enemy forces cannot hit with their weapons. Every time they try, the tank automatically launches counter-measures destroying the would-be tank-slaying-round mid-air.

Enemy fire would be futile. The U.S. Army would be even more unstoppable.

Right now, two countries already have battle-proven APS: Russia and Israel.

The United States defense industry has lagged behind on developing this futuristic method of shielding. To find a solution, the U.S. Army selected three companies to collaborate and adapt their battle-tested tech for U.S. military vehicles. The Israeli company Rafael’s Trophy system used by the Israel Defense Forces is being adapted for the Abrams and the Iron Fist from the Israeli IMI Systems for the Bradley. American company Artis’ Iron Curtain has been in development for use on the Stryker.

M1 Abrams tank with Trophy system (US Army)

In amazing news for Army families and soldiers, General Mark Milley recently told the Senate the Army intends to ultimately outfit the entire heavy force, all combat vehicles, with APS.

WHAT DOES IT STOP?

Basically, APS can stop weapons that are extremely destructive. Weapons that can potentially be lethal to tanks and other armored combat vehicles, even though they are protected by armor.

The APS “shields” could protect U.S. forces from light antitank weapons, guided missiles and rocket-propelled grenades.

Thus far, not every single weapon any enemy could wield would be stopped – but certainly many of the most commonly used would be stopped before impact.

This current generation of APS is very effective against lower-velocity explosive rounds fired by enemy aircraft and ground forces.

HOW WILL IT PROTECT ABRAMS TANKS?

The U.S. Army has awarded a $193 million APS contract to Leonardo DRS to protect the new M1A2 Abrams tanks. The Israel Defense Forces has been using Trophy to protect its Namer heavy infantry fighting vehicle.

ARMY’S NEW MACHINE GUN WILL BLAST LIKE BATTLE TANKS

This APS Trophy uses a number of radars positioned around the tank. The radars help provide 360-degree detection of incoming fire.

Around the clock, the radar scans the entire perimeter out to its maximum range. When a threat penetrates this monitored area, Trophy automatically detects and classifies that threat. Breathtakingly fast, its super smart computer works out the correct kill point in space to intercept before the weapon can hit the tank.

Within milliseconds, Trophy has evaluated whether it is a real threat, sends a warning to the crew and nearby forces and also launches an EFP (Explosively Formed Projectile) to destroy the projectile.

The counter-measure intercepts the incoming, say RPG, and collides with it mid-air at a safe distance from the vehicle.

Translation – threats cannot penetrate Trophy’s protection, keeping the tank and crew safe from strikes that could have been lethal.

It is important to note that Trophy differentiates between serious and non-serious threats. For example, if a tank is rolling through a town and a child throws a rock at it – Trophy will not fire at, and destroy, the rock.

SO WHAT DOES IT FIRE?

Insiders call it a “hard kill” approach to stopping incoming threats.

The interceptors are launched from the top of the tank. With Trophy, the interceptors are a series of small, shaped charges.

Trophy fires the small explosives at a specific point in space to exactly intercept and destroy the incoming enemy round.

EXPOSING CONCEALED ENEMY ATTACK POSITIONS

Not only does the Trophy system stop the incoming rounds, it also pinpoints the position of the enemy firing at the tank. Trophy figures out the threat’s trajectory in order to successfully intercept the threat. Part of these calculations involves Trophy figuring out the incoming round’s point of origin.

Trophy can instantly relay this location to the force, enabling quick targeting to stop the source of the threat as well.

By doing so, Trophy provides an additional advantage. It rips away the enemy’s ability to conceal themselves. For example in an urban setting, once an enemy combatant fires an RPG from his hidden position in a building, the location will be exposed to the entire force by Trophy. The Army can quickly respond – and it will be the last time that enemy combatant ever tries to kill U.S. forces.

BRADLEYS AND THE IRON FIRST LIGHT

Trophy is not necessarily compatible with all U.S. Army combat vehicles. Power, size and weight are three key challenges to adapting APS to U.S. military vehicles.

Active Protection Systems rely on lots of power and can be rather heavy. A Bradley has less power available than a tank and a cumbersome, heavy APS could undermine the Bradley speed and maneuverability that soldiers rely on.

THIS ORANGE, SQUISHY BODY ARMOR MATERIAL COULD SAVE LIVES

The Army selected IMI’s Iron Fist for adaptation to the M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles.

General Dynamics is collaborating with IMI Systems to provide Iron Fist Light. Potentially this APS could be used to upgrade protection not just on the Bradley’s, but other vehicles, even light 4×4 vehicles.

Like Trophy, it is designed to provide 360-degree protection. Iron Fist Light finds threats two ways: a search and track radar and a staring infrared sensor. It detects hostile fire and small arms ammunition burst.

Iron Fist Light fires a small warhead to intercept the threat at a safe distance from the vehicle. It either destroys it or a shock-wave effect defeats it.

DANGER TO DISMOUNTED TROOPS?

Stopping incoming fire from ever hitting a tank is awesome to protect the crew inside- but what about the dismounted troops nearby? Will the explosion of the missile or RPG at a safe distance from the tank have the consequence of putting boots on the ground at increased risk?

TANK-KILLING ROBOT REVEALED

It is vital that soldiers near armored tanks are not put in further danger due to protection of the vehicles with APS. The explosion caused by the interceptor hitting the enemy round could result in threats like shrapnel raining down on dismounted troops.

Active Protection Systems definitely pose a challenge, but solutions are available. The U.S. military will need to evolve and consider how they need to adapt tactics, techniques and procedures to the deployment of this futuristic technology. In fact, clever adaptation could lead to dismounted troops near armored vehicles gaining enhanced protection and becoming safer than ever before too thanks to this tech.

Thus far, it seems as though Israel and Russia have largely been able to adapt, so solutions are readily available. If Russia can adapt, then the U.S. military most certainly can as well.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Right now, take the hypothetical extreme scenario of the U.S. forced to engage in battle against Russia. The U.S. Army would face armored vehicles that are protected by advanced APS – as in, protected by these amazing futuristic shields.

If the Russian military fired accurately on the U.S. Army vehicles, then the U.S. Army vehicles would be hit by potentially lethal rounds without APS to shield them.

If the U.S. Army responded by targeting the Russian vehicles firing missiles and RPGs at them, then the American rounds could be ineffective. Russia’s APS could potentially stop U.S. lethal rounds from ever making contact with Russian APS protected vehicles.

General Milley recently updated the Senate that within 24 months Active Protection Systems will be ready for operational use. Currently, there is only budget for four brigades to receive this life-saving, futuristic shield.

Artis’ Iron Curtain is the only U.S. APS under consideration with the U.S. Army right now for the Stryker.

Ultimately, the entire heavy force, all of the U.S. Army ground vehicles, including all the tanks, current combat vehicles and future combat vehicles will be ramped up with active protective systems. Down the line, Humvees, JLTVs and even U.S. Army helicopters might be outfitted with this remarkable tech.

#AceNewsReport – July.07: Editor says I get disgusted and ashamed that U.K. citizens cannot act like adults and not like spoilt children who cant get their own way including London’s Mayor: A blimp dubbed “Trump baby” will be allowed to fly over London next Friday during President Trump’s visit to the United Kingdom after the city’s mayor gave the green light for the stunt to occur: The 19-foot balloon depicting Trump in an unflattering manner is expected to fly over the U.K. parliament July 13 during Trump’s three-day trip. The office of London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a frequent Trump critic, on Thursday gave the approval for the balloon to fly #AceNewsDesk reports

HUGE news coming in: DONALD J TRUMP BABY WILL FLY! @SadiqKhan tried to play hard ball – in the end he had to make a Deal. No surprise – he’s never won anything in his life! Sad – but True! — Trump Baby (@TrumpBabyUK) 12:20 PM – Jul 5, 2018

“The Mayor supports the right to peaceful protest and understands that this can take many different forms,” a spokesperson for the mayor said in a statement to Sky News. “His city operations team have met with the organizers and have given them permission to use Parliament Square Garden as a grounding point for the blimp.”

Calls for the blimp to fly began when a group, who describes itself as anti-fascist “art activists” proposed carrying out the protest. Thousands signed a petition and raised more than $22,477 to have the inflatable fly over London.

“Donald Trump is a big, angry baby with a fragile ego and tiny hands,” the group wrote in a crowdfunding page. “…So when Trump visits the UK on Friday the 13th of July this year, we want to make sure he knows that all of Britain is looking down on him and laughing at him.”

The balloon must be tethered to the ground from Parliament Square Gardens and cannot fly higher than 98 feet, Sky News reported.

Wow! Tremendous win for #TrumpBaby supporters! This is BIG news that nobody saw happening – I am going on a World Tour! Wherever little Donald goes, I will be close behind. There is so much good to do, the world needs #TrumpBaby! https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/trump-baby/updates/ …?

— Trump Baby (@TrumpBabyUK) 10:16 AM – Jun 27, 2018

Activist Leo Murray told Sky News the blimp is an “obscene mutant clone of” Trump.

Trump’s U.K. visit is expected to be met with significant protests from left-wing activists, promoted by members of the left-wing Labour Party who have repeatedly called for Trump to be uninvited.

The U.S. president is expected to meet with U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May, who came under pressure from opposition lawmakers in late June to cancel President Trump’s upcoming visit over his administration’s controversial treatment of families caught illegally crossing the border.

A “Stop Trump” march is also expected to take place in central London next Friday.

Fox News’ Adam Shaw contributed to this report.

(LONDON) #GrenfellTowerFire Inquiry: MET Police unable to provided an adequate report on the number of “ Victims “ decides today to ‘ Pass the Buck ‘ and place the blame on ‘ Brave Fight-Fighters who could not move and use their ladders as with normal fires ‘ due too shoddy and non-fire-resistant cladding and toxic fumes from said materials …’ due to lack of hea lth and safety being applied and had to use a ‘ Stay Put ‘ policy to prevent even more deaths namely firefighters: Q/ Where is MET’s report ? #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – June.07: The Metropolitan Police is investigating London Fire Brigade’s use of a “stay put” policy during last year’s fire at Grenfell Tower: The tower’s residents were told to stay in their flats in the early stages of the fire – a so-called stay-put policy……….BBC home affairs correspondent Tom Symonds said the Met was considering possible health and safety offences……….It comes as lawyers for London Fire Brigade have been outlining its role at the Grenfell Tower public inquiry………..Met Police commander Stuart Cundy said: “Seventy people, plus baby Logan, died as a direct result of that fire: ………”It’s an absolute obligation on us to be looking at the most serious potential criminal offences that may have been committed.” ………This new line of inquiry is part of a wider police investigation looking into the refurbishment of the tower and its impact on the fire………..The Met is looking at all aspects of the management of the fire and London Fire Brigade’s response to identify whether a crime was committed……….The most likely offences would be under the Health and Safety at Work Act, which requires public bodies and companies to protect the safety of the public………Offences under the act usually result in fines, though prison sentences are possible #AceNewsDesk reports

Grenfell Tower inquiry: What questions will be answered?

Previously the Met has told survivors of the fire that Kensington Council and the Tenant Management Organisation were being investigated in connection with corporate manslaughter…………Meanwhile, eight men and one woman have been arrested in dawn raids over allegations of fraud in connection with the fire.

‘No evacuation plans’

On Monday, an expert report submitted to the Grenfell inquiry by Dr Barbara Lane found that the fire brigade’s policy to tell people to stay in their homes had “effectively failed” barely half an hour after the fire started at 01:26 BST on 14 June……..A change in policy recommending that residents leave was not made until 02:47……….On the final day of opening statements at the inquiry, Stephen Walsh, for the London Fire Brigade (LFB), said a mass evacuation of Grenfell Tower could not have happened at a stroke………He said it was a “fundamental misunderstanding” that fire commanders could change policy at any time when the building was not designed for a simultaneous evacuation………”If there is no policy applied by the building owner which provides for a policy of simultaneous evacuation and there are no evacuation plans and there are no general fire alarms – what is an incident commander on the fire ground to do?” he asked………..The building had only a single staircase and the incident commanders had no way of communicating with everyone in the building, he said……….Meanwhile, the conditions were rapidly changing, in some cases second-by-second, with lobbies and stairwells filling with toxic and potentially lethal smoke, the hearing heard………..Mr Walsh added that despite the “stay-put” policy, firefighters did evacuate residents at an early stage………They were also making decisions about the viability of getting residents out safely, and dealing with the willingness of residents to leave flats, which they perceived to be safe, to enter dark, smoke-filled corridors.

‘Impossible situation’

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU), which represents many of the Grenfell firefighters, agreed there was “no obvious and safe alternative strategy” to telling residents that they should stay put………Martin Seaward, for the FBU, said commanders and firefighters were left in an “impossible situation”…………The refurbishment of the building had seen material installed that made it a “highly combustible death trap”, which the brigade lacked the training and procedures to tackle, he said……….Both the union and the LFB flatly denied claims that firefighters were guilty of unconscious racism as they worked……..On Tuesday, Imran Khan, a lawyer for some of the bereaved and survivors, cited the “stereotypes” used in firefighters’ descriptions of residents from black or minority backgrounds.

‘Nasty lie’

On Wednesday, the inquiry heard that the man who lived in the flat where the fire started was not responsible for the tragedy………A lawyer for Behailu Kebede said his client had called 999 and alerted his flatmates and neighbours as soon as he saw smoke………Claims that his client had packed a suitcase and left the building to burn were a “nasty lie”, the hearing was told…….Since the fire, police have been so concerned for his safety that they suggested he go into a witness protection programme.

(ROME, Italy.) Latest: EU Stooge President Sergio Mattarella has appointed IMF official Carlo Cottarelli as the interim prime minister tasked with forming a new government after two Eurosceptic parties won majority and were undermined over changing taxation by the President as it would create a loss to the EU-coffers #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – May.28: Editor says just as l thought would happen when the two parties who WON and vowed changing rules that would affect EU their present Italian President Sergio Mattarella has appointed IMF official Carlo Cottarelli as the interim prime minister tasked with forming a new government: After Sunday’s report that Italy has been thrown into political chaos and elections look likely. Here’s what it all means https://t.co/lBM8jpvRishttps://t.co/PJxTkpAN6K: As Italy’s PM-designate Giuseppe Conte said he’s given up on attempts to form a government after President Sergio Mattarella rejected his candidacy for economy minister: The country may now face a new election by the end of 2018: https://t.me/acebreakingnews/840536

The PM said elections will be held no later than August unless he wins the confidence of parliament………..President Mattarella announced his choice Monday, having diluted the deal between two Eurosceptic parties who had collective majority in the March elections and had since dedicated themselves to forming a new government…………..The newly-appointed PM Cottarelli vowed to establish a new government “very quickly” to take the country through this period before fresh elections are held in the fall of 2018 or early next year. “I’ll present myself to parliament with a program which – if it wins the backing of parliament – would include the approval of the 2019 budget. Then parliament would be dissolved with elections at the beginning of 2019,” Cottarelli said shortly after being named interim prime minister #AceNewsDesk reports

‘Unprecedented institutional clash’: Italy fails to form govt over anti-EU economic minister

Following the rejection of Paolo Savona’s candidacy for minister of economy, ex PM-designate Conte said he had given up on attempts to form a government, leaving open the possibility the country would face new elections. Furious with Mattarella for sabotaging their deal over the choice for economy minister, the eurosceptic coalition slammed the country’s establishment for jeopardising democracy.

Italian journalist Marcello Foa believes that Mattarella’s move could be easily defined as illegitimate as “there is no constitutional reason and no constitutional power to block a government that has the majority in parliament.” Foa blasted the decision as “really shocking,” as it’s becoming quite obvious that the president is not acting in Italy’s best interests, but rather in the interests of the EU which he does not wish to “disturb.”

Lorenzo Pregliasco, professor of political science at the University of Bologna, echoed those sentiments, saying that the president’s decision to veto Savona’s appointment were dictated by his views on the European Union.

“The potential minister of economy has quite strong credentials,” he said. “He was a professor as well as minister in the early 1990s in another government.” Meanwhile, in an attempt to dispel rumors and clarify his views, Savona issued a statement where he said he stood for “a different Europe, stronger, but more equal.”

As he did on Tuesday before a Senate hearing, Zuckerberg refused during a House of Representatives committee hearing to make any promises to support new legislation or change how the social network does business…….“It is inevitable that there will need to be some regulation” of internet firms, Zuckerberg said, but he avoided any specifics #AceNewsDesk reports

(Full text of Zuckerberg’s prepared testimony: bit.ly/2Hkhr9L) Although Zuckerberg, 33, had never testified at a congressional hearing before, he succeeded in deflecting questions like a Washington veteran. Forty times the internet mogul told lawmakers he had no answers at hand and would get back to them later. About one in three lawmakers got that response over the two days:

Democratic Representative Debbie Dingell expressed frustration with Zuckerberg’s frequent promises to get back to lawmakers later in writing. “Some things are striking during this conversation,” she said. “As CEO, you didn’t know some key facts.”

On one point, Zuckerberg undercut his consistent message that Facebook users have control of their data. He said he was among the nearly 87 million people whose personal information was improperly shared with political consultancy Cambridge Analytica. He gave no further details.

His admission that even the company’s tech-savvy founder was unable to protect his own data underscored the problem Facebook has in persuading skeptical lawmakers that users can easily safeguard their own information and that further legislation governing Facebook is unnecessary.

The Cambridge Analytica issue was the reason Zuckerberg was on Capitol Hill, answering questions about how that company – which has counted U.S. President Donald Trump’s election campaign among its clients – got hold of data about Facebook users.

“How can consumers have control over their data when Facebook does not have control over the data?” asked Representative Frank Pallone of New Jersey, the ranking Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, at the beginning of Wednesday’s hearing.

Zuckerberg said it would take “many months” to complete an audit of other apps that might also have improperly gathered or shared users’ data.

“I do imagine that we will find some apps that were either doing something suspicious or misusing people’s data,” he said.

INEVITABLE REGULATION?

Zuckerberg was unable to answer Dingell, the Michigan congresswoman, when she asked how frequently Facebook used computer code embedded in websites to gather dossiers on virtually everyone online.

In a series of questions on how people can remove data from Facebook, Zuckerberg said the company does “collect data on people who are not signed up for Facebook, for security purposes.” He had no response when asked how a non-Facebook member could remove information without signing up for the service.

He also said he was not familiar with what various media reports call “shadow profiles,” collections of data assembled on Facebook users that they have no knowledge of or control over.

Wearing a dark suit and tie and politely prefacing almost every remark with “Congressman” or “Congresswoman,” Zuckerberg appeared even more controlled than he did on Tuesday when he testified before senators. He refrained from cracking jokes and flashed few smiles.

The performance had favorable results. Facebook shares closed up 0.78 percent on Wednesday after rising 4.5 percent Tuesday. Over the two days, the value of Zuckerberg’s stake in the company grew about $3 billion.

Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Greg Walden, told reporters he would talk with committee members about holding similar hearings with other technology chief executives. He did not name specific companies.

“This is a wake-up call to Silicon Valley and the tech community that if you let these things get out of hand, having grown up in a very lightly regulated environment, you could end up with a lot more regulation than you seek,” he said after the hearing.

Many Democrats disagreed, saying their Republican colleagues held no genuine interest in having a meaningful debate that could lead to a regulatory overhaul of how technology firms handle data.

What remained as the dust settled on Wednesday was an inability to translate bipartisan concern into regulation due to the complexity of regulating technology issues and the powerful lobbying forces assembled against any effort to do so.

“If you think it is hard to pass a bill that affects a lobbyist’s favorite client,” said Alvaro Bedoya, a former congressional aide who worked on privacy issues for former Senator Al Franken, “try passing a bill that affects all of them.”

BEFORE THE HEARING: AND REASON WHY IT WILL NOT ACHIEVE ANYTHING

Florida senator says Facebook CEO ‘forthright’ in meeting: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has already apologised to users for not doing enough to protect their privacy. Now he plans to apologise to Congress, saying in prepared testimony that Facebook hasn’t done enough to prevent its tools from being used for harm:

Zuckerberg will testify before a joint hearing of the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees on Tuesday and before the House panel on Wednesday. On Monday, he met privately with the leaders of the Senate committees, including Florida Sen. Bill Nelson, the top Democrat on the Senate Commerce panel.

Nelson said afterward that Zuckerberg was “forthright and honest to the degree he could” be in the private, one-on-one meeting. Nelson said he believes Zuckerberg is taking the congressional hearings seriously “because he knows there is going to be a hard look at regulation.”

Democrats like Nelson have argued that federal laws might be necessary to ensure user privacy. Republicans so far have shown little appetite for such regulation, but that could change if there are future privacy scandals or Democrats gain control of Congress in this November’s elections.

“I think he understands that regulation could be right around the corner,” Nelson said.

After his meeting with Zuckerberg, Nelson released the following statement:

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), the top Democrat on the Senate Commerce Committee, issued the following statement after his meeting today with Facebook chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg. The meeting comes just one day before Zuckerberg is scheduled to appear before a joint hearing of the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees on Tuesday:

I just met one-on-one with Mr. Zuckerberg and in no uncertain terms reminded him that Facebook has a responsibility to its users to protect our personal data. Facebook failed us. Not only did they fail to safeguard the personal information of millions of users, they concealed it from us – and this is not the first time the company mishandled user information. Only now are they coming clean and informing those who have had their information compromised and telling us they are going to make things right.

“Meantime, we still don’t know what Cambridge Analytica and other third parties have done with the data they collected. That’s why I’ve asked Chairman Thune to haul Cambridge Analytica in to answer these questions at a separate hearing. The chairman has given me his assurance he plans to do just that. The bottom line here is: if Facebook can’t fix its privacy problems, then how can Americans trust them to be caretakers of their sensitive information?”

Zuckerberg was also scheduled to meet with Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John Thune, R-S.D., ahead of Tuesday’s hearing.

Zuckerberg’s written statement was released ahead of two days of congressional hearings in which he will not only try to restore public trust in his company but also stave off federal regulation that some lawmakers have floated. His company is under fire in the worst privacy crisis in its history after it was revealed that Cambridge Analytica, a data-mining firm affiliated with Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, gathered personal information from 87 million users to try to influence elections.

In the testimony released by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which he is expected to deliver Wednesday, Zuckerberg apologizes for fake news, hate speech, a lack of data privacy and foreign interference in the 2016 elections on his platform.

“We didn’t take a broad enough view of our responsibility, and that was a big mistake,” he says in the remarks. “It was my mistake, and I’m sorry. I started Facebook, I run it, and I’m responsible for what happens here.”

After resisting previous calls to testify, Zuckerberg agreed to come to Capitol Hill this month after reports surfaced — and the company confirmed — that Cambridge Analytica had gathered Facebook users’ data. In the remarks, Zuckerberg said his company has a responsibility to make sure what happened with Cambridge Analytica doesn’t happen again.

Zuckerberg is also expected to be asked about Russia’s use of U.S. social media during the 2016 elections – a subject of several congressional investigations and special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference.

In the statement, Zuckerberg addresses Russian election interference and acknowledges, as he has in the past, that the company was too slow to respond and that it’s “working hard to get better.” The company has said that as many as 146 million people may have received information from a Russian agency that’s accused of orchestrating much of the cyber meddling in the election.

“We will continue working with the government to understand the full extent of Russian interference, and we will do our part not only to ensure the integrity of free and fair elections around the world, but also to give everyone a voice and to be a force for good in democracy everywhere,” Zuckerberg continues.

In the testimony, Zuckerberg acknowledges that the questioning will likely be critical.

“We face a number of important issues around privacy, safety, and democracy, and you will rightfully have some hard questions for me to answer,” Zuckerberg says.

The prepared remarks do not reveal new information about how data was shared or what Facebook will do. In addition to saying he is sorry — something he has done several times already — Zuckerberg outlines the steps the company has taken to restrict outsiders’ access to people’s personal information. He also says the company is investigating every app that had access to a large amount of information before the company moved to prevent such access in 2014 – something that came too late in the Cambridge Analytica case.

Separately, Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post Monday that the company is establishing an independent election research commission that will look into the effects of social media on elections and democracy. He said the commission will work with foundations across the U.S. to set up a committee of academic experts who will come up with research topics and select independent researchers to study them.
