(NEWTOWN, Conn.) JUST IN: Sandy Hook Elementary School has been evacuated on the six year anniversary of the mass shooting that claimed dozens of lives after a ‘ bomb threat ‘ deemed not credible wa s received: Moments of silence were observed in Newtown and other places Friday morning in memory of the vic tims #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Dec.14: Editor says here’s what we know …….Police said a threat was made around 9 a.m. It was deemed not credible, but school was dismissed for the day as a precaution, CBS2 affiliate WFSB reports: “Please stand with our community as we attempt to survive another tragic anniversary,” Newtown Action posted on social media……….Police said the threat is not tied to bomb threats being emailed nationwide…………..On Dec. 14, 2012, 26 students and staff were gunned down at the elementary school’s former location #AceNewsDesk reports

Sandy Hook Elementary School students have been sent home for the day after a bomb threat forced an evacuation on the sixth anniversary of the massacre that killed 20 first-graders and six educators: Newtown police say the threat was made at about 9 a.m. Friday and the school was evacuated. Lt. Aaron Bahamonde says there’s a heightened level of anxiety in town on the anniversary and the school superintendent decided to cancel remaining classes.

It’s unclear whether the threat was related to the bomb threats made nationwide Thursday: The school where the shooting happened on Dec. 14, 2012, was knocked down and a new building was constructed at the same site.

Moments of silence were observed in Newtown and other places Friday morning in memory of the victims.

(WOLVERHAMPTON, U.K.) Full Court Report: Viktorija Sokolova Case: Unnamed 16yr old boy who lure a young 14yr old girl on ‘ Social Media ‘ to a park and ‘ smashed her head in with a hammer ‘ has been found guilty of murder and rape after he had denied killing her #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Dec.14: A boy who lured a 14-year-old girl to a park and inflicted “incomprehensible” violence upon her has been found guilty of murder and rapeViktorija Sokolova’s head was “smashed in” with a hammer-like object in a “sustained and ferocious” attack…………Her lifeless, partially clothed body was found dumped on a bench in Wolverhampton’s West Park the next day……………The 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named, had denied the killing but was convicted after a three-week trial.…………Jurors at Wolverhampton Crown Court unanimously found the defendant guilty of murder and rape, but were directed to clear him of a further charge of sexual penetration of a corpse…………..Lithuanian-born Viktorija went to the park late at night on 11 April after her killer contacted her via Facebook Messenger, the court heard………Once there, the pair met at a pavilion referred to as the “black house”, where Viktorija was struck over the head at least 21 times, causing multiple fractures to her skull and spine #AceNewsDesk reports

Family handout: Viktorija Sokolova was reported missing the day before her body was discovered on a park bench

The boy raped her and dragged her 150m across the park, where he left her draped over a bench………Police said the assault was so violent they found three of the schoolgirl’s teeth and an earring, ripped from her ear, in the blood-spattered pavilion…….A dog walker found Viktorija’s body the next morning, initially mistaking it for a blow-up doll left in the park as a “prank”……..The court heard her killer had claimed the pair had consensual sex and she was “alive and well” when he left to go home……….But he was caught on CCTV as he attempted to cover up what he had done by hiding clothing and hurling his victim’s phone towards a lake…………The “forensically aware” murderer hid the mobile phone he used to contact Viktorija behind a wardrobe, police said………….In the hours after the killing, he used his brother’s phone to search “how to delete your Facebook account permanently” and also filmed himself scrolling through the Notes app on his iPhone as he prepared to delete evidence………The recording was of such high quality, detectives were able to use the clip to match a fingerprint left on the screen to the defendant’s…………..Despite the mobile phone evidence, the boy’s barristers had suggested Viktoria’s parents may have played a part in her death, after it emerged microscopic traces of her stepfather’s semen were found in her underwear…………But the pair were eliminated from police inquiries at an early stage, and forensic experts suggested the transfer of her stepfather’s DNA was via innocent means.

CCTV shows Viktorija Sokolova’s last hours alive

Justice Jeremy Baker warned the teenager, who will be sentenced on 22 February, said there was “only one sentence” he could impose: The judge said he was “obviously concerned as to the extreme nature of the offences in this case” and has ordered a pre-sentence psychiatric report……………..During his defence Viktorija’s killer declined to take the witness stand – claiming to be suffering from learning difficulties…………But his barristers accused her mother, Karolina Valantiniene, and stepfather, Saidas Valantinas, of murdering the teenager……………..Mr Valantinas said he had no idea why his DNA was on her clothing and said the defence’s argument was “unreasonable”, “unsubstantiated”, and “rude”……………The court also heard about his “turbulent” relationship with Viktorija, who was sent to live with her father in Northern Ireland for two months because she repeatedly ran away……………………Jurors were told there was also a physical altercation between Viktorija and her mother the Sunday before her murder…………….During the trial, Ms Valantiniene said, the murderer never looked at her, “maybe because of him feeling ashamed”……………………“This is beyond comprehension that something like that has happened to us,” she said. “I keep asking God why and for what this happened to us.”

Presentational grey line

Det Insp Caroline Corfield said there was “nothing” in the defendant’s background to suggest he would “commit a seriously violent act, let alone the inexplicable levels of violence involved in Viktorija’s murder” The pair had been friends, she said, emphasising her killer was not a “faceless person” she met online……….“Viktorija could never have imagined someone she knew and trusted would betray her trust in the way he did,” she said……………….Wolverhampton Safeguarding Board has said it would publish a serious case review next year looking at Viktorija’s contact with the authorities “to establish whether any lessons can be learned”.

(WASHINGTON) JUST IN: Senate in historic vote of 56-41 to pull US forces from a military conflict under the 1973 War Powers Act but the resolution is seen largely as symbolic and unlikely to become law though Sen.Sanders says when Democrats take control of the house in January they will get it passed #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Dec.14: The US Senate has voted to withdraw US military aid for Saudi Arabia’s war on Yemen and to blame the kingdom’s crown prince for the murder of a journalistThe historic vote is the first time any chamber of US Congress has agreed to pull US forces from a military conflict under the 1973 War Powers Act…………..Some of President Donald Trump’s fellow Republicans defied him to pass the measure with Democrats by 56-41 #AceNewsDesk reports

The non-binding “war powers resolution” calls upon President Trump to remove all American forces engaging in hostilities in Yemen, except for those combating Islamist extremists…………….The Senate then unanimously passed a resolution blaming Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi’s murder in October, and insisting that the kingdom hold accountable those responsible…………..The US chose to cease refuelling Saudi war planes last month, and Thursday’s resolution – if it were ultimately passed into law – would prohibit that practice from resuming.

Mohammed bin Salman shakes hands with Donald Trump in the White HouseReutersPresident Trump has consistently defended US business and military ties with Saudi Arabia

Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who co-sponsored the measure with Republican Mike Lee of Utah, hailed the vote……………..“Today we tell the despotic government of Saudi Arabia that we will not be part of their military adventures,” he said………..He described the outcome as a signal to “the world that the United States of America will not continue to be part of the worst humanitarian disaster on the face of the earth”……..Republican Senator Bob Corker told MSNBC: “If he was before a jury, the crown prince, he would be convicted in my opinion in 30 minutes.”

Status quo no longer acceptable

Analysis by Barbara Plett, BBC State Department Correspondent

The two resolutions send a strong message that for a majority of senators, the status quo with Saudi Arabia is no longer acceptable.

They value the strategic relationship but are deeply uneasy about the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. They have viewed his foreign interventions with growing concern, especially the human cost of the war in Yemen.

But it was the grisly murder of Jamal Khashoggi that tipped the scales: it dramatically increased support for the resolution to withdraw US military support for the Saudi-led campaign in Yemen, something that failed to pass earlier in the year. Many senators saw the Khashoggi killing as the blatantly egregious act of an ally that felt immune from rebuke.

And they were dismayed when the administration stood staunchly by the prince without censure, even though the CIA concluded he probably ordered the killing. Senators want to see the administration shape the alliance as the senior partner, and enforce red lines.

Senior Republican Senator Bob Corker noted recently that much of the bipartisan activism in the Senate had been fuelled by a perception that there is no balance between values and interests in the administration’s policies.

Presentational grey line

President Trump has vowed to veto the measure, and it is unlikely right now to pass the House of Representatives, which on Wednesday blocked a vote on the matter………………But Senator Sanders said he expects the resolution to succeed once Democrats formally take over control of the House in January following their mid-term elections victory……………The Trump administration had argued the bill would undercut US support for the Saudi-led coalition against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen………..White House officials have emphasised US economic ties to the kingdom. Mr Trump’s adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has continued to cultivate ties with the prince, according to the US media.

A ceasefire agreed by the warring parties on Thursday has come into effect in the country’s main port, Hudaydah.

After the deal was reached in Sweden, negotiators for both parties shook hands to applause, though they later expressed scepticism: UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he hoped this would be the starting point to bring nearly four years of civil strife to a close………………Since hostilities began in 2014, thousands of civilians have been killed, and around 14 million people have been pushed to the brink of starvation, according to the UN……………….Saudi Arabia buys the bulk of its weapons from the US, Britain and France.

(LONDON) Third Party Contractor ‘ Capita ‘ awarded half a billion in taxpayers money in 2012 to provide recruits for Army fails to deliver both on time and within budget every year since: NAO fou nd initial delay was the MOD and IT infrastructure …. Capitas’ reply was we underestimated the pro blem time #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Dec.15: An Army recruitment drive has faced “significant problems” – including a website that cost three times its budget and was 52 months late, a National Audit Office report has found: Outsourcing giant Capita was awarded the £495m contract for Army recruitment in 2012 – but has failed to hit soldier recruitment targets every year since……………Capita admitted it had “underestimated the complexity” of the project………………….The Army said it had “put in place a plan to address the challenges” #AceNewsDesk reports

The NAO found the initial delay to the £113m website was caused by the Ministry of Defence, which failed to meet its contractual obligations to provide the IT infrastructure to host Capita’s recruitment software: The Army passed responsibility for developing the whole system to Capita in 2014, but “due to the complexity of the Army’s requirements, system development was delayed even further”, the report said.

And despite the website being finished in November 2017, the Army estimates there were 13,000 fewer applications between November 2017 and March 2018 than in the same period the previous year………Capita has consistently missed the Army’s recruitment targets, with the total shortfall ranging from 21% to 45%, the NAO said……..The Commons Defence Committee was told in October that the Army currently has 77,000 fully trained troops, compared with a target of 82,500………………..The Army and Capita have introduced some “significant changes” in the last year, but none have resulted in enough soldiers being recruited, according to the NAO.

An Army recruitment advert, which focuses on men being allowed to show their emotions

The report found it can take as long as 321 days for recruits to go from starting an application to beginning basic training, and that many drop out of the process while waiting: A total of 47% of applicants dropped out of the process voluntarily in 2017/18, and both the Army and Capita believe the length of the process is a significant factor in this, the report said.

It added the project will not achieve its planned savings of £267m for the MoD: Capita – whose 10-year contract continues until 2022 – said it had overhauled the “governance” on its contract and there were already improvements…………Nia Griffith MP, Labour’s shadow defence secretary, said the Conservatives’ “ideological obsession with outsourcing” had “driven up costs and resulted in the failure to recruit enough personnel to the Army”.

(WASHINGTON) JUST IN: Federal Court Report: Maria Butina Trial: After reaching a ‘ Plea Deal ‘ not to testify in trials elsewhere has pleaded guilty on Thursday to ‘ Conspiracy to Act as an Illegal Foreign Agent ‘ in the U.S.: Butina said she acted “under direction of” a Russian official whom CNN has identified as Alexander Torshin, the recently retired deputy governor of the Central Bank of Russia #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Dec.13: Alleged Russian spy Maria Butina pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday for conspiracy to act as an illegal foreign agent in the United StatesButina, 30, was accused of working to infiltrate Republican political circles through groups such as the National Rifle Association to bolster Russian interests: Butina said she acted “under direction of” a Russian official whom CNN has identified as Alexander Torshin, the recently retired deputy governor of the Central Bank of Russia……………..“Butina sought to establish unofficial lines of communication with Americans having power and influence over US politics,” the prosecutor said in a Washington courtroom……………..Her guilty plea and agreement to cooperate comes with the hope that prosecutors will ask for a reduced sentence: She agreed to turn over any evidence of crimes she is aware of, submit a full accounting of her financial assets, sit for interviews with law enforcement (and waive right to counsel during those interviews) and testify before grand juries or in trials in Washington or elsewhere #AceNewsDesk reports

READ: Maria Butina plea agreement

She faces a maximum of five years in prison and will likely be deported after serving any time. A hearing was set for February to discuss a sentencing date:

In court, Butina said her mind was “absolutely clear.” This comes in contrast to her lawyer’s previous notice to the court that as of late November, she was in solitary confinement in jail and the conditions were “starting to have a profound psychological impact” on her………………….Since late November, Butina has been allowed time out of the cell at night and for other activities, including for church and to visit with a Russian orthodox minister, which has helped her mental state, her attorney Robert Driscoll said.

The conspiracy, as prosecutors described it in court, kicked off no later than March 2015 with a draft proposal Butina wrote to Torshin and others called the “Description of the Diplomacy Project.” ………….It described her plan to become an unofficial conduit of communication between Russia and the US, especially through the Republican Party, at a time when the two governments were less willing to negotiate formally. She had also planned to use $125,000 from Torshin to attend conferences associated with the GOP — particularly the NRA, which she believed “had influence over” the Republican Party, she admitted…………NRA members also received her invitation to visit Moscow and meet with high-ranking Russian politicians. Torshin and “US Person 1”, whom CNN identified as Butina’s boyfriend Paul Erickson, a GOP political operative, helped her prepare for the trip. After the trip in December 2015, she said to her Russian backer, “We should let them express their gratitude now, we will put pressure on them quietly later.”………….She helped a US citizen host “friendship dinners” with other wealthy and influential Americans to talk about US-Russian policy, prosecutors said and Butina admitted in court………………Butina organized a delegation and oversaw invitations to attend the National Prayer breakfast in 2017. She noted to Erickson at the time that the people were “coming to establish a back channel of communication.” ……………She also admitted that Torshin “did not believe” the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs would “go for it” when she asked him in November 2016 “how to create a dialogue with the then President-elect’s advisers,” prosecutors said in court, referring to advisers of Donald Trump.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Thursday that Butina took the deal “to survive.”………………“She used this option to survive,” Zakharova told CNN. She has described Butina’s arrest as politically motivated.

Erickson’s defense attorney, William Hurd, attended the plea hearing: After the hearing, he said he would speak to his client before deciding whether to make a public statement. He said he did not know in which jurisdiction Butina would be helping a criminal investigation, if she does indeed cooperate with one involving Erickson.

US District Judge Tanya Chutkan began Thursday’s court session by revealing why Butina was appointed a public defender………..Chutkan said that prosecutors had tapes of a call Butina made from jail with a journalist and that prosecutors flagged this to the judge as a potential conflict of interest…………..On the call, Butina referred to someone whom prosecutors believe could be her lawyer about acting as a go-between to pass messages to journalists………………..Chutkan said she did not find that Butina’s lawyer Driscoll acted improperly, but said it was why a public defender was appointed…………During the calls, the prosecutors also learned that Butina told other inmates to talk to her lawyer and to speak to the media on her behalf.

This story is breaking and will be updated.

(CALIFORNIA) #ClimateChange Study 1980’s – 2018: Researchers who studied the winter snowfall in the mountains there revealed that rising temperatures are reducing the period during which snow is on the ground in the mountains – snow that millions rely on for their fresh water #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Dec.13: Snowy mountain winters are being “squeezed” by climate change, according to scientists in CaliforniaThey presented their findings at the American Geophysical Union meeting – the world’s largest gathering of Earth and space scientists……….“Our winters are getting sick and we know why,” said Prof Amato Evan, from the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, who carried out the investigation. “It’s climate change; it’s rising temperatures #AceNewsDesk reports

NASASatellite images from 2002 (left) compared with 2017 (right) highlight the decreasing snowpack……………………Prof Evan studied the annual cycle of snow and melt in the western US from the early 1980s to 2018

Mountains in California (c) Amato EvanAmato Evan/ScrippsCalifornia relies on snowmelt for its fresh water supply: He found that the length of time snow is on the ground there is continually “being squeezed” into a shorter period. And the early arrival of summer, he explained, is a driving force behind sometimes devastating wildfires……………….“Particularly in a place like California where we get all of our precipitation during the winter time, that means that our summers are growing longer,” he told BBC News. “And really what that means is our fire seasons are growing longer…………“We’ve got less snow, we’ve got a longer fire season, we’ve got infestations [of pests that thrive in warmer temperatures] – these ecological issues; it’s a kind of perfect storm of really bad outcomes, which then result in – in some cases – these massively dramatic fires.”
A firefighting helicopter drops water at the Sand Fire on July 23 2016 near Santa Clarita, CaliforniaAFPThere is a link between snowpack decline and wildfires, say the researchers: Donal O’Leary from the University of Maryland, who presented his research on what he called the “significant relationship” between snow and wildfire, agreed……….Earlier snowmelt, he said, “is leading to more wildfires, particularly in places like the Sierra Nevada in California”.

Mountain snow is also what millions of people rely on for fresh water supplies – in California, particularly, the reservoirs are refilled by annual snowmelt…………Other scientists who have looked at global climate models have seen similar results across much of the Northern Hemisphere. And researchers say this signal from the snowpack is clear evidence that the impacts of climate change are now playing out in the mountains.

(RICHMOND, Ind.) JUST IN: School Lockdown As teenager en route to ‘ Dennis Intermediate Middle School ‘ on Thursday to ‘ commit acts of violence ‘ exchanges gun fire with police after tipster alerted the authorities preventing anyone getting injured #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Dec.13: A teenager was en route to an Indiana middle school Thursday to commit an act of violence, but police were able to stop him after receiving a tip, state police said: The teen exchanged gunfire with police at Dennis Intermediate School in Richmond before killing himself, Indiana State Police Sgt. John Bowling told reporters, citing preliminary results of the investigation #AceNewsDesk reports

“Someone knew something, and they said something,” the sergeant said, attributing the fact that no students were hurt to the tipster: Bowling said he could not verify if the teen was a student. It was unclear how many shots were fired or why the teen was targeting the middle school, he said.

The Richmond Community Schools district put all of its students on lockdown, according to a spokeswoman: Students were transported to Richmond High School, about a mile away, and parents can pick them up at the adjacent Civic Hall Performing Arts Center, the district said.

Dennis Intermediate is in a residential neighborhood in the city of about 37,000. Richmond is near the Ohio border, about 70 miles east of Indianapolis.
